Two halves tonight
- First half: what you owe the people whose data you analyze
- Second half: how you find out what has already been said, with a librarian here to help
- The two halves are connected. Both are about accountability to someone outside your head.

Nearly 700,000 people
Kramer, Guillory, and Hancock, 2014
- For one week in January 2012, Facebook manipulated the News Feeds of nearly 700,000 users
- Some saw fewer positive posts from friends, others saw fewer negative posts
- Researchers then measured what those users posted themselves
- Fewer positive posts produced slightly more negative content, and the reverse held
- Published in PNAS as evidence of “massive-scale emotional contagion”
Why the reaction was explosive
- No one was told their emotional environment was being manipulated
- No one had the opportunity to decline
- Facebook pointed to terms of service authorizing data use for “research”
- The researchers argued the manipulation was minor and the effect size tiny
- PNAS appended an editorial expression of concern about the consent process
- Reasonable people still disagree about whether the study was ethical
Tuskegee, 1932 to 1972
- The U.S. Public Health Service studied untreated syphilis in 399 Black men in Macon County, Alabama, for forty years
- The men were told they were receiving free treatment for “bad blood”
- Penicillin became standard in the 1940s. The researchers withheld it.
- 28 men died directly of syphilis, 100 of related complications, 40 wives were infected, 19 children born with congenital syphilis
- Federally funded, credentialed staff, published for decades without objection
Milgram and Humphreys
- Milgram (1961): participants believed they were delivering painful shocks to a stranger because an authority figure told them to. Most complied.
- The findings were foundational. The distress was acute and for some lasting.
- Humphreys (1970): recorded license plates of men meeting anonymously in public restrooms, traced addresses, then visited their homes in disguise as a health survey
- Exposure of that data could have destroyed marriages, careers, lives
- Each researcher believed the work served a greater good
The common thread
- Each case involved participants who were harmed, deceived, or exploited
- Each researcher had institutional support and sincere motives
- Good intentions are not a protection. They never were.
- Ethics is therefore a disposition, not a form: how you treat the people you study and how honestly you report what you find
- What follows from that is external accountability: principles and institutional review
Belmont: respect for persons
National Commission, 1979
- People are autonomous agents capable of making their own decisions
- Informed consent: understand the research, the risks, and the right to withdraw
- Protection of vulnerable populations: children, prisoners, those with diminished capacity to consent voluntarily
- Survey a listener about a podcast and consent is straightforward
- Analyze public posts and the question gets much harder
Belmont: beneficence and justice
- Beneficence has two obligations: do no harm, and maximize the ratio of benefits to risks
- Harm includes physical, psychological, social, and economic injury
- Content analysis usually carries minimal risk: you interact with texts, not people
- Justice: benefits and burdens distributed fairly across groups
- Tuskegee violated justice by loading all risk onto a marginalized population while the knowledge accrued to everyone else
Consent in practice
- Valid consent describes the study, the risks, the voluntariness, the contacts, and how data will be stored
- Deception is sometimes justified, but always paired with mandatory debriefing
- Passive consent, the Facebook terms-of-service move, is generally insufficient
- Active consent requires an affirmative act: a signature, a click, a spoken yes
- Secondary data analysis raises whether the original consent covered your use. Ethics here is still actively evolving.
Three tiers of review
- Exempt: minimal risk, in defined federal categories. Most content analysis of publicly available material lands here.
- Expedited: no more than minimal risk but not fully exempt. Many surveys and interview studies.
- Full board: more than minimal risk, vulnerable populations, or deception
- The IRB makes the determination, not the researcher. You submit, the board decides.
- Submitting something you suspect is exempt wastes nobody’s time
Walking Twitch through Belmont
- Chat came from the public IRC interface; streams from the public API
- No IP addresses, no emails, no internal user IDs, no payment data, no whispers
- Usernames are pseudonymous: chosen handles, often unlinked to offline identity
- Respect for persons rests on public broadcast, not on consent, which was never asked
- Beneficence: risk is minimal, and no move in this course aggregates toward identity
- Justice: the sample spans channels broadly, including non-gaming categories
Public is not automatically fair game
- AoIR has long argued that “public” does not settle the ethical question (Markham & Buchanan, 2012)
- In practice, that obligation means three things
- Do not aggregate in ways that would re-identify an individual user
- Do not republish entire chat logs verbatim
- Do not amplify messages whose senders expected obscurity more than broadcast
Three contrast cases
- Twitch whispers. Private messages, reasonable expectation of privacy. Expedited or full review.
- A private Discord with the same people. Closed membership raises the expectation of privacy even when the senders chat publicly elsewhere.
- An internal moderation log with platform flags on users. Now the data carries classifications about identified people. Full board is likely.
- The narrow slice is what makes our corpus exempt by design
- Most data you meet in your career will not be that narrow
When the reporting goes wrong
- Fabrication: inventing data that do not exist
- Falsification: manipulating data or results to change the outcome
- Selective reporting: running many analyses, reporting only the ones that worked
- HARKing: hypothesizing after the results are known, then writing as though you predicted them all along
- HARKing converts exploratory work, which is legitimate, into fake confirmatory work
Pre-registration is a paradigmatic commitment
- Usually sold as a technique for controlling false positives. Accurate but incomplete.
- It embodies the hypothetico-deductive move: derive predictions from theory before examining data, then submit them to test

Discussion
On Nosek et al. (2018), “The preregistration revolution”:
- They call it a revolution. Is the mechanism they describe strong enough to change behavior, or does it depend on incentives they do not control?
- The paper separates prediction from postdiction. Where in your own thinking does that line blur most easily?
- Is pre-registration compatible with grounded theory or thematic analysis? Make the case on epistemological rather than practical grounds.
- What does a Registered Report protect that a pre-registration does not?
Take a position out loud, then let someone talk you out of it.
Now the other half: the conversation
- Imagine walking into a debate that has run for years among invested people
- Blurt your idea out and it is dismissed as naive, or as already answered in 2012
- To contribute you must know the key voices, the contested points, the open questions
- A literature review is the disciplined act of listening before speaking
- It is how you earn the right to ask your question
What a review actually accomplishes
- Situates your work in a context you can demonstrate you understand
- Identifies a gap, which is what answers the “so what?” question
- Prevents reinventing the wheel, painfully common and easily avoided
- Provides methodological guidance: validated measures, sampling strategies, documented limitations (Krippendorff, 2018; Neuendorf, 2017)
- Refines your question from a vague curiosity into something tractable
Phase one: exploratory searching
- Start broad. You are learning terminology, key names, and which journals publish this.
- Google Scholar first: less comprehensive than databases, fast and free
- Wikipedia is not citable, but its reference list is a map to real scholarship
- Any good article’s reference list is also a map: repeated citations mark foundations
- Collect everything promising in Zotero and tag liberally. Organization comes later.
Phase two: systematic searching
- Communication & Mass Media Complete, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus
- Boolean operators: AND narrows, OR expands, NOT excludes,

(livestream* OR "live streaming" OR Twitch) AND
(motivation* OR gratification* OR engagement) AND
(viewer* OR audience* OR chat)
Log every search: date, database, exact string, limiters, results, how many kept. The log is a methods disclosure, not a personal note.
Phase three: citation chaining
- Backward chaining: read the references inside a keystone article
- Forward chaining: use “Cited by” to see who has built on it since
- The growth is a snowball, but a strategic one, following the network outward from the work that matters most
- Ad hoc searching cannot support later power analysis, because you cannot say whether what you found is representative of the literature
- A systematic search can be reproduced and updated by someone else
Knowing when to stop
- Saturation is the point where more searching stops changing your understanding
- Three consecutive database searches turning up zero new relevant articles
- New articles citing the same eight to ten sources you have already read
- You can predict what an article says from its title and abstract
- Saturation does not mean you read everything. It means the map has stopped changing.
Questions worth asking the librarian
- Which database actually indexes the journals in my area, and what does it miss?
- How do I set up an alert so new work on my topic finds me?
- What is the fastest route to an article my library does not hold?
- Can Zotero pull straight from this database, and how do I fix broken metadata?
- What would you search that I would not have thought to search?
